IIT SPOKEN TUTORIAL

History:

An Initiative of National mission on Education through ICT, MHRD, Govt. of India to promote IT literacy through Open Source Software. The Spoken Tutorial Project is about teaching and learning a particular FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) like Linux, Scilab, LaTeX, PHP & MySQL, Java, C/C++, LibreOffice etc. via an easy Video tool.

Since its inception in 2011, Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty's Hindu College has successfully implemented the Spoken Tutorial Project, conducting an impressive 281 training programs over the past five years. These programs have empowered students to enhance their IT skills alongside their regular curriculum, fostering self-paced learning and independence. The certification from IIT Mumbai's Spoken Tutorial Project has not only saved time and money but also boosted students' confidence. Moreover, our lecturers and professors have been equipped to effectively guide and train students, further enriching the learning experience. Through Faculty Development Programs (FDP) and software training courses, we have been able to upskill our students, making them industry-ready.

Objective of the cell:

The Spoken Tutorial project, initiated by IIT Bombay, aims to provide training and education on various Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) tools and technologies, through a unique "Talk-to-Computer" methodology. The main objectives are:

  • 1. Empowerment: Empower students, teachers, and professionals with FOSS skills, making them industry-ready.
  • 2. Accessibility: Make high-quality education accessible to all, especially in rural and underserved areas.
  • 3. Employability: Enhance employability by providing hands-on training on industry-relevant software tools.
  • 4. Digital Literacy: Promote digital literacy and bridge the digital divide.
  • 5. Community Building: Foster a community of learners, contributors, and educators around FOSS.
  • 6. Capacity Building: Build capacity in institutions and organizations to adopt FOSS and provide training.
  • 7. Research and Development: Encourage research and development in FOSS and related areas.

By achieving these objectives, the Spoken Tutorial project aims to contribute to the growth of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce, capable of leveraging FOSS technologies for innovation and entrepreneurship.
