The Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty's Hindu College was started in the year 1969 at
Pattabiram, a semi - urban area of Chennai, to commemorate the birth centenary of our illustrious
founder, Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty Garu whose services were praised by
Dr.Annie Besant and Mahakavi Bharathiar.
Our College is situated in the Chennai - Thiruvallur High Road at a distance of about 25 Kms from
Chennai. It is easily accessible by city buses as well as sub-urban trains. There is a railway
station in front of the College with the name 'Hindu College' which has been laid with the efforts
of the old students and staff of our college. All passenger, sub-urban trains in the
Chennai-Tiruvallur-Arakkonam route stop here. Concessional tickets for Train and Bus are given to
all the eligible students of the College.
The College campus consists of Six Blocks, Library, Computer Labs, Electronics Lab,Visual
Communication, Multimedia Lab, Commerce Lab, Auditorium, Generator, Women's Waiting Hall, NCC Parade
ground, NCC Obstacles Court, Play Fields, Vehicle parking sheds and temple. Our students are trained
for holistic development and empowered with necessary skills to face the society.
The college has
the committees of Ragging Redressal Cell,Campus discipline,Students grievance redressal cell and
Women grievance redressal cell.
The college has membership with other institutions like Andhra Chamber of Commerce, Hindustan
Chamber of Commerce, Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, American
Library, British Council Library, Madras University Library and ICSSR.

In 1963 the idea of establishing a college was vigorously pursued by Sri. C. Ethiraj, the then Honorary Correspondent of all the educational institutions under the charities. He successfully realized this vision in 1969. Thiru. D. Rajarathnam, the then M.L.A. of Poonamallee Constituency, helped the charities to acquire suitable land for the college from the Government of Tamil Nadu within the Avadi Township area on the Madras - Tiruvallur State Highway at Pattabiram. Lecture halls were built within a month at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakh. A master plan was prepared for permanent buildings at an estimated cost of Rs.25 lakh.
The college started functioning from 3rd July, 1969 with PUC classes in humanities. In 1970, B.A. History, B.A. Economics and B.Sc. Mathematics courses were introduced. After Sri C. Ethiraj laid down his office as the honorary correspondent of all the educational institutions of charities in March 1975, Dr. T. M. Srinivasan was elected as the honorary correspondent of the college. In the academic year 1975-1976, he secured affiliation to B.Com course. A new building was opened in 1975 with the assistance of Government of Andhra Pradesh and Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam for which the foundation stone was laid by Honble. Sri J. Vengala Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The academic year 1976-1977 marks the introduction of co-education in the college. In the year, 1978-1979 the University of Madras granted affiliation to B.A. English. In the following academic year 1979 - 1980 affiliation to B.A. Telugu was obtained. Dr. T. M. Srinivasan laid down his office as Honorary Correspondent on 31st March 1981. Sri C.N. Alwar Chetty became the next Honorary Correspondent of the college on 1st April 1981. He secured affiliation for B.Com Corporate Secretary ship in 1982 and chose to retire in 1990.
Sri M.V. Cunniah Chetty, B.Sc., B.Com., became the Secretary of the college on 6th June 1990. He introduced Evening College in the campus in the academic year 1995 - 1996. The Evening College is under self financing stream and it is absolutely service oriented. He was instrumental in introducing B.Sc., Computer Science, B.Com., B.B.A., B.Sc. Mathematics, B.C.A., B.Com. Corporate Secretaryship, B.Sc. Electronics and Communication Science courses besides the construction of Seethamma Block which was opened by Hon'ble Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chief Justice, Madras High Court on 25th March 2000, during the Tri-Decennial Celebrations of the college.
Sri M. Venkatesaperumal, B.A., F.C.A., took charge as the Secretary of the college with effect from 01-04-2001.He secured affiliation to B.Sc., (Information Systems Management), M.Com and additional sections in B.Com. The construction of the compound wall for the entire campus was a marvelous achievement under his stewardship.
The 'Dharmamurthi Calavala Cunnan Chetty Block' was opened by Sri. V.R. Bakthavatsalam, the then President of the Board of Trustees, on 8th September 2003. The cunnan auditorium was opened by Sri. Vummidi Sreehari, Trustee on 10th April, 2005. This spacious auditorium can accommodate up to one thousand students.
The decennial function of the Evening College was fittingly celebrated on 15.4.2005.Prof. S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice - Chancellor, University of Madras, presided over the celebrations. Our benevolent management donated rupees one lakh towards Madras University Senate House Restoration fund.Sri. M.V. Cunniah Chetty, took over as the Secretary of the college for the second term with effect from 01.04.2006. The NAAC Peer Team visited our college on 7th & 8th April 2006 and accredited our college with B+ Grade (79.05%). The introduction of B.Sc. Visual Communication, B.Com (Accounting and Finance) and Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) is yet another milestone during his second tenure as the Honorary Secretary of the college.
Sri M. Venkatesaperumal became the secretary of the college for the 2nd term with effect from 01.04.2009 succeeding Sri M. V. Cunniah Chetty, who chose to retire. The Cunnan Ruby Jubilee Block was opened by Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras on 17th April, 2010 as part of Ruby Jubilee (40th Year) Celebrations of the college. The Ruby Jubilee Block, Calavala Cunnan Block, Cunnan Sports Centre, a big shelter in front of the canteen to facilitate the students to take their food and the provision of a Computer Lab in Cunnan Block to help the poor students to learn basics in computer, English & Foreign languages are yet another milestone during his tenure as Secretary. The NAAC Peer Team visited our college for Re-accreditation from 4th to 6th February 2013 and awarded B Grade with a CGPA of (2.83) on a four point scale for a period of 5 years from 23.03.2013. The Vicennial function (20 years) of Evening College was celebrated on 19.09.2015 presided over by Justice J. Chalemeswar, Judge, Supreme Court of India. The College has started M.A. Economics, M.Phil. in Commerce and Social Work in the academic year 2016-2017 and introduced M.A. Tamil and B.A.Criminology and Police Administration under self financing scheme during the academic year 2018-2019.
